Katy and Cheryl were best
friends, even though they lived thousands of miles apart.
One day Cheryl was in a bad mood.
When Katy said, “Hello?”
Cheryl said, “I thought you’d never answer!”
While Katy talked her about her
week, Cheryl sighed loudly and said, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, get on with it!”
And when Katy said how she had
slipped and fallen on a banana peel, Cheryl said “Hee hee hee! I bet you looked like an ox.”
“Well!” Katy said.
“If you’re going to be rude to me, I’ll just hang up.”
And she did.
“Well!” Cheryl said.
She stomped around her apartment.
She kicked her toe on the table.
“OWWW!” Cheryl yelled.
“I WANT A COOKIE!”
So she decided to make some.
She got out the flour, sugar, salt,
baking soda, cinnamon, and nutmeg;
the butter, egg, bananas, oatmeal,
and of course, the chocolate chips.
She measured,
poured,
stirred,
And measured a little more.
As she was mashing the banana,
she remembered Katy’s fall.
It wasn’t very nice of me to laugh, Cheryl thought.
She spooned the batter out—
Not all of it onto the pan—
Set the timer, and put the cookies
in the oven.
Cheryl picked up her photo album.
There was Katy by the Brooklyn Bridge,
And Katy by the beach,
Katy in her wedding dress,
And Katy and Cheryl on top of a
mountain.
The timer beeped.
The cookies tasted like banana
and chocolate and love.
And Cheryl knew
the best way to say sorry.
