The Goal of the Editing Process, As Seen on My Office Door

I've had this on my door for a few months, underneath a printout of William Stafford's "An Introduction to Some Poems" and next to a corn wreath that Elizabeth C. Bunce gave me to ward off evil spirits. (She sent it to me after several uncanny things happened during the editing of A Curse Dark as Gold: Chapters went missing and then turned up later, e-mails disappeared . . . All very ironic and/or spooky if you've read the book.)

I like the "diversion" best -- though not in my books themselves, of course.
